Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng said in a May 16, 2024 statement in Washington, D.C. that was aired by CCTV Video News Agency (China) that the United States is irresponsibly applying tariffs to key products from China, and he said that this is protectionism with the goal of containing China's new energy sectors, hampering its development, and getting an advantage in the upcoming presidential elections by competing to be tough on China.

Xie Feng: "The U.S. side has used its Section 301 tariffs review in an irresponsible way, and further stepped up tariffs on imports on electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, solar cells, critical minerals, semiconductors and other products from China. This is protectionism in the name of fair competition. The real aim is to contain China’s new energy sectors, hamper China’s high-quality development and get an advantage in the elections by competing to be tougher on China."
