Following are excerpts from statements by Kuwaiti cleric Shafi' Al-Ajami (in an interview on May 24, 2013 and at a rally on June 11) and from a response by Kuwaiti MP Nabil Al-Fadhl (made in an interview on June 13). The statements were posted on the Internet.

Shafi' Al-Ajami: Brothers, we are at war, and the Syrian people are in need of weapons. We will declare this loud and clear, and not be shy about it. Just like Iran and Lebanon declare [support for the Syrian regime], I declare, on behalf of myself and of all the Islamic scholars, that we are buying weapons and will continue to buy weapons, so that the Syrian people can defend their hopes, their honor, their country, and their children.
We want to buy missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, bombs, and RPGs. We have been doing this, and we will continue to do so. Any regime or country that prevents us... We declare that the countries that prevent our purchasing weapons for Syria are conspiring and treacherous countries, and that the day will come when these countries will fall, just like the Syrian regime.
The weapons needed by the mujahideen in Syria are: first of all, heat-seeking missiles and guided missiles, which cost 8,000 dollars, tandem-charge warheads, which cost 1,000 dollars, and RPGs, which cost 800 dollars. They also need 23 mm anti-aircraft guns. We are collecting money to buy all these weapons, so that out brothers will be victorious.

Opposite the Lebanese embassy in Kuwait
Today, we took the village of Hatla, we took the village of Hatla, and we slaughtered a Shiite man. We slaughtered him with knives.
Crowd: Allah Akbar!
Shafi' Al-Ajami: Just like you slaughtered our women and children in Qusayr, we have slaughtered one of your leaders, Hussein, who was in Hatla, Deir Al-Zour. We slaughtered him today.
Crowd: Allah Akbar!
Shafi' Al-Ajami: We slaughtered his son along with him.

Shafi' Al-Ajami: We will arm the mujahideen from here, as well as from the Arabian Peninsula, from the Gulf states, from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey. The money will come not from the governments, but from the peoples, the Islamic scholars, and the honorable merchants. These weapons will be purchased with pure money, not with the money of usurers or traitors. People ask how come the governments do not support the [Syrian people]. It is because their money is harram. It is an honor to support the Syrian people, but these [governments] have no honor.

Nabil Al-Fadhl: Today, we are facing a problem. Hate speech is gaining ground, and the culture of terrorism is being spread by people who call themselves Kuwaiti. They speak publicly about slaughtering people and preparing fighters. I haven't seen them gong to fight Israel, in order to defend the Palestinians in the occupied land, yet they go to Arab countries to slaughter children there. Now, this hate speech is being used in public. What is the Ministry of the Interior doing? What is the Kuwaiti government doing? Nobody is responding. This silence and feebleness will only exacerbate this kind of discourse.

To the [Islamists] who groom their breads and yell: "Kuwaiti children, go die in Syria," I say: "Send your own children to die, or go yourself – you and your beard!" Don't deafen the world with your yells. I refer especially to [Kuwaiti Islamist MP] Al-Harbash, who is leading this campaign, and to [Kuwaiti cleric] Shafi' Al-Ajami. The Ministry of the Interior remains silent while Al-Ajami collects donations and buys weapons.
