On January 5, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, member of the Iranian Assembly of Experts, delivered a Friday sermon, in which he said that "Saudi Arabia gave the money, and America did the planning," and that the plan was to "gradually bring weapons into Iran, and in the month of Bahman, they would finish the job." He further said that "the voice [of the protesters], speaking in the name of Trump and Netanyahu, is not the voice of the [Iranian] nation." "The nation will silence that voice!" he cried, and the crowds responded with chants of "Death to America," "Death to England" and "Death to Israel." Saying that the Internet has "caused a crisis," in Iran, he called to impose restrictions on it, as in China and Russia, administering it with a local server. The sermon was broadcast on Iran's TV Channel 1.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami: "What Iran is undergoing these days is a manifestation of the frustration of America. In the international arena, the global arrogance has been totally defeated. ISIS was the product [of the U.S.], which said that it would take 10-30 years to liberate Mosul. With the help of Iran, this took eight months. They wanted to create a new Israel in the region [in Kurdistan], but everybody realized this. It is Iran that prevented them from succeeding.

"They invested money in order to rule Iraq – but nothing. They invested money so that Syria, the frontline of resistance against the Zionist regime, would lose [the battle] – but they didn't succeed. What is happening now is a manifestation of this frustration. This is the story: Saudi Arabia gave the money, and America did the planning. The plan was that through Herat and Erbil, they would gradually bring weapons into Iran, and in the month of Bahman, they would finish the job. That was the plan.

"One of the pieces of scum of the tyrant [Shah] said: 'On the 22nd of Bahman [the Day of the Revolution], we shall be in Iran.' I say to him and all those pieces of scum: You shall never ever have a place in Iran. If you come here, our first step will be to break your legs, and then we will prepare the gallows for you."

Crowd: "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Khamenei is the leader! Death to those who oppose the Rule of the Jurisprudent! Death to America! Death to England! Death to the hypocrites and Saddam! Death to Israel!"

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami: "They say that the people want freedom, and that the people want their voice to be heard. What, is there no freedom? Is the voice of the people not heard? Of course, that voice, which is speaking in the name of Trump and Netanyahu, is not the voice of the [Iranian] nation. It is a foreign voice. The nation will silence that voice!"

Crowd: "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Khamenei is the leader! Death to those who oppose the Rule of the Jurisprudent! Death to America! Death to England! Death to the hypocrites and Saddam! Death to Israel!"

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami: "America, the Zionist regime, and most recently, Saudi Arabia seem to be vying with one another in their support of the rioters. The first thing that Trump the psycho does every day when he awakens is to write about his support [for the rioters].

"We believe that the Internet can lead to opportunities or to a crisis. As you have seen, in our country it has caused a crisis. What we are saying is that you will have the Internet, but that its server will be local. The server will be administered here. China brought Internet into the country and administers it by itself. Russia brought Internet into the country and administers it by itself. Why don’t you bring national Internet to the country – Intranet – as your leader has been saying for a long time?"
