Lebanese Chess Prodigy Mark Abou Deeb on Refusing to Play against Israeli Opponents: Israel Is the Enemy

On December 25, 2018, Lebanese chess prodigy Mark Abou Deeb appeared on OTV (Lebanon). He shyly explained that he had refused to compete against an Israeli player during a chess championship in Spain because Israel is an enemy. He was also prodded to thank Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah for liberating Lebanon from Israel.

Following are excerpts:

 

Rosanna Rammal: Many Lebanese people consider you to be a hero, right?

Mark Abou Deeb: Yes.

Rosanna Rammal: You refused to compete against an Israeli opponent at the chess championships in Spain, right?

Mark Abou Deeb: Yes.

Rosanna Rammal: You knew what you were talking about. Did you know why you would not continue to play?

Mark Abou Deeb: Yes.

Rosanna Rammal: Did you know why you were making this decision?

Mark Abou Deeb: Yes.

Rosanna Rammal: Why?

Mark Abou Deeb: Because Israel is an enemy.

Male TV host: Speak up so we can hear you.

Mark Abou Deeb: Because Israel is an enemy.

Male TV host: You can say it even louder.

Mark Abou Deeb: Because Israel is an enemy.

Male TV host: Bravo.

Rosanna Rammal: Bravo.

Rosanna Rammal: Many people spoke about Mark Abou Deeb and were proud of him, including the secretary-general of Hizbullah, Hassan Nasrallah.

How did you feel when Nasrallah spoke about you?

Mark Abou Deeb: I was very happy.

Rosanna Rammal: You were very happy… What do you know about Nasrallah? Who is he?

Mark Abou Deeb: He is a resistance fighter. He liberated Lebanon from Israel.

Rosanna Rammal: He spoke about you. What do you want to say to him today?

Male TV host: Do you want to say to him: Thank you? Do you want to tell him you’d do it again?

Mark Abou Deeb: Thank you.
