In a February 5, 2019 interview on Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV (Lebanon), Lebanese political analyst Anis Naqqash, speaking from Tehran, said that Iran is an Islamic republic and not a democratic republic. He explained that the idea that democracy is the salvation for all peoples is deception by the West and that the West. He gave the examples of France and the United States, which he described as colonialist countries despite the fact that they are democratic. He added that Iran regularly holds local and national elections, and that even the Supreme Leader is elected by an assembly of elected experts.

Following are excerpts:

Anis Naqqash: Iran is an Islamic Republic, period. It is not a democratic republic. Imam [Khomeini] personally erased the word "democracy"… According to this political theory… Some people talk about democracy as if it protects individuals from oppressive, criminal, or evil policies. It is deception by the West to say that democracy is the salvation for all peoples. What it actually wants is [for others] to submit to it. France is a democratic country, but it colonized Algeria and Vietnam. Nobody can deny that the United States is a democracy,  yet it is a colonialist country that fights the entire world.

In Iran, there are elections every year – for municipalities, for local governments, for parliament, for the president… Even the Supreme Leader is elected by an assembly of experts, who are elected by the people.
