Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh: Peace With Israel Is Jordan’s Strategic Choice, But A West Bank Escalation Leading To Forced Transfer Of Palestinians Would Be Tantamount To A Declaration Of War

Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said in a November 21, 2023 show on Al-Arabiya Network (Saudi Arabia) that peace with Israel is Jordan’s "strategic choice." However, he said that if Israel breaches the peace agreement in a material and contractual manner that poses a danger to Jordan’s national security, then "all our options would be on the table."

PM Bisher Khasawneh: "Escalation in [the West Bank], through settlers' violence, or by harming the Islamic and Christian holy places is where we draw the line. Creating such circumstances that would lead to forced transfer of [West Bank Palestinians] by Israel would be tantamount to a declaration of war against us, because it would constitute a material breach of the peace agreement."

Interviewer: "What does 'a declaration of war' mean? People would like to know what you mean by it."

Khasawneh: "It means that this would be our very last option. If we reach that point, we will use all the means at our disposal to prevent such a scenario, which could lead to the elimination of the Palestinian cause, and would harm the national security of the Jordanian Hashemite Kingdom. It is not something that we are preparing for today. I would like to reiterate that peace, for the Jordanian Hashemite Kingdom, is based on justice, and is Jordan's strategic choice, but if it comes to material and contractual breaches of the peace agreement by Israel, in a manner that would pose such dangers to Jordan's national security, all our options would be on the table."
