Iranian Leader, Ali Khamenei, Threatens the US

The Iranian news channel, IRINN, broadcast comments made by Iranian leader, Ali Khamenei, in which he threatened the US in the wake of the American activity in the holy Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala. Following is a verbatim translation of excerpts from Khamenei's comments, aired on May 19 :

Khamenei: They (the Americans) thought they would be able to easily win this great, complicated game. They will not be able to. Perhaps some of them understand this to some extent. Of course they understand. And those who until now have not understood, will understand this in the near future. They will taste the bitterness of defeat. The Muslims feel that this is their responsibility, and this sentiment is true.

Drawing near to the holy places (Najaf and Karbala) and damaging their honor is no trivial matter. It is intolerable for Muslims. Shiites around the world are extremely sensitive to this issue, justifiably so. This is also not unique to the Shiites. The Muslims have responded to this issue and will continue to do so. As long as they (the Americans) persist in committing this crime, so will the wrath of the Islamic world increase and rage.
