Iranian Political Analyst Emad Abshenas: There Would Be No Azerbaijan Without Iran; If Russia Does Not Resolve Iran-Azerbaijan Tensions, Iran Might Be Forced To Act

Iranian political analyst Emad Abshenas, the editor-in-chief of Iran Diplomatic, said in a March 31, 2023 interview on Mayadeen TV (Lebanon) that had the IRGC's Qods Force not intervened on behalf of Muslims in Azerbaijan, then the Armenians would have occupied Baku. He said that the Azeri people are ungrateful towards Iran, and that there would be "no Azerbaijan" were it not for Iran. He also said that if Russia fails to resolve the issues in Azerbaijan, Iran may be forced to act, and he added that the U.S. plans to expand NATO into Georgia and Azerbaijan if it is successful in Ukraine.

Emad Abshenas: "When the Armenians were marching in Nagorno-Karabakh towards Baku, had Iran not intervened, had the Qods Force not intervened... General Esmail Qaani, who is the commander of the Qods Force today, fought for Azerbaijan for the sake of the Shia and the Muslims there, in order to protect and help them, and so the Armenians would not take over Baku. Iran saved Ilham Aliyev when he fled from Baku. If not for Iran, there would be no Azerbaijan. Armenia would have occupied Baku.

"Iran saved them, and today they are ungrateful. Ilham Aliyev has betrayed the Iranians.

[...]

"ISIS marched on Nagorno-Karabakh and conquered it. It was not Azeri army, but ISIS, Turkey, and Israel that occupied this region. Today Ilham Aliyev is being ungrateful to the Iranians, who helped Azerbaijan in its tragedy. He is being ungrateful, in cooperation with Israel. He believes that if he continues to cooperate with Israel, he may grow. He does not know his real size in this region. So far Iran has not acted. A few days ago, [Iranian FM] Amir-Abdollahian visited Moscow, and discussed this matter with Lavrov, who assured him that Russia would be the one to take action."

Interviewer: "Okay, let's see..."

Abshenas: "So far, Iran has not taken any steps. However, if Russia does not act and this matter is not resolved, Iran will be forced to act and take steps that will not be in Aliyev's interests, in order to deal with his arrogant behavior, which is supported by the Zionist entity.

[...]

"There is an American plan to expand NATO to Georgia and Azerbaijan."

Interviewer: "Of course."

Abshenas: "If NATO succeeds in Ukraine, it might expand to Azerbaijan and Georgia."
