Following are excerpts from an interview with Egyptian presidential candidate Ayman Nour, which aired on Al-Nas TV on August 7, 2011:
Interviewer: How do you view Egypt's relations with Israel?
Ayman Nour: In my view, Egypt's relations with Israel, like Egypt's relations with the US, will witness significant changes in the near future. Two days ago, I told a US official on Al-Hurra TV – and you can see it on the Internet… He said to me: "We feel that whether the next Egyptian president is a liberal, like you, or an Islamist, Egypt's relations with the US will be affected." I told him I could guarantee that this would happen, because any president who respects the will of the people who voted for him will not agree to be treated by the US as servants, slaves, or employees, like the presidents here who were working for you. Any ruler in Egypt will respect the people's will, which is against your administration and the unbalanced way it views justice.
Interviewer: This was what you said after the US ambassador demanded your release from [Mubarak's] prison…
Ayman Nour: Not just the ambassador, but even the secretary of state and the president. That's their business. They were dealing with me as a presidential candidate, not as Ayman Nour. They don't support my agenda, and I don't support theirs. All this does not concern me at all.
