Chinese Military Expert Song Zhongping: The Joint China-Russia Military Exercise In Sea Of Japan Aims To Contribute To Regional Peace And Stability

On July 17, 2023, Chinese military expert Song Zhongping posted on his YouTube channel a video in which he said that the upcoming joint China-Russia military exercise in the Sea of Japan is meant to "safeguard the national security of both countries, maintain strategic maritime passages, and contribute to regional peace and stability." Song also criticized the United States, Japan, and South Korea for their efforts in establishing a missile defense system in the Indo-Pacific region, and he accused these nations of harboring suspicions and hidden agendas among themselves, resulting in a divided alliance where each country pursues its own ulterior motives.

Song Zhongping: "The Sea of Japan is not wide, but it has now turned into a hot sea. The Sea of Japan does not belong to Japan; it is entirely part of international waters. However, two large-scale military exercises will take place in the Sea of Japan. One exercise, as we mentioned before, will be held by the naval and air forces of China and Russia.

"The People's Liberation Army has already deployed warships and aircraft to the relevant area for military exercises. The other exercise is being prepared by the military alliance of the United States, Japan, and South Korea. We can see that these two exercises have a certain pertinence.

"The China-Russia exercise aims to maintain strategic maritime passages, safeguard the national security of both countries, and contribute to regional peace and stability. However, the exercises of the trilateral military alliance of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea are aimed at consolidating their cooperation in the military field, so the main subject of their exercises is missile defense. Moreover, the DPRK's Hwasong-18 missile test has been constantly emphasized, so the U.S., Japan and South Korea must gather together to conduct joint anti-missile exercises around the DPRK's Hwasong-18 and other ballistic missiles.

"This is what the U.S., Japan, and South Korea have disclosed about their exercises. We can see that this is not the first or second time the three countries have come together to conduct exercises targeting North Korean missiles. As for North Korea, although it has launched the Hwasong-18 and a series of other ballistic missiles, these ballistic missiles are for the defense of the country, rather than posing a real threat to the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. In fact, the relevant exercises conducted by the U.S., Japan and Republic of Korea are to highlight the threat theory of the DPRK, and also to accelerate the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in the Republic of Korea, and Japan will accelerate he deployment of its own sea-based anti-missile system to constantly increase it leverage.

"So, from the entanglement of the U.S., Japan and South Korea, we can see that the U.S. intends to fully include these two countries in its own order to jointly counter North Korea. Of course, confronting North Korea is just a cover. The main purpose is to unite the three countries and build a missile defense system in the Indo-Pacific region to jointly counter China and Russia.

"The two military exercises we have seen are both in the Sea of Japan, and they have certain relevance and pertinence. But as China and Russia, what we want to achieve is to strengthen military relations and strengthen military exchanges with each other. However, as for the United "States, Japan, and South Korea, why do they want to build a so-called global missile defense system? The purpose is to implement comprehensive military containment against countries including China. If a global missile defense system can be established, they will believe that they have a high chance of success in taking action against other countries.

"But what do we see? The U.S., Japan and South Korea appear to be coming together on the surface, but in reality, they also have their own suspicions and hidden agendas. To full come together and obey the political arrangements and military coordination of the United States also poses significant difficulties. Therefore, from these two military exercises, we can see that one is united and single -minded, while the other is divided in intensions, with each harboring their own ulterior motives."
