On March 24, 2016, it was reported that hackers with ties to Syria had successfully conducted a cyber-attack against a British water utility company and altered the levels of chemicals being used to treat tap water.

The name and location of the company is being withheld for security reasons and has been referred to only by the pseudonym Kemuri Water Company (KWC).

The hack was conducted via SQL Injection and phishing and was discovered by Verizon Security Solutions. They said that the hackers had twice managed to manipulate valves controlling the flow of chemicals - but fortunately their actions had no real effect, as they lacked knowledge of the specific systems involved.
