On May 3, 2024, a pro-Al-Qaeda media group published a nine-page essay by a Syrian jihadi titled "Globalism or Localism: A Crisis within the Jihadi Movement." The essay discusses the jihadi movement's gradual deemphasis of global jihad against the West in favor of armed struggle against local regimes, warning that this development does not serve Muslim interests.
