Citing the Turkish government's disregard for the environment, the hacker collective Redhack is claiming that on November 14 it obliterated $670 billion in electric bills from a Turkish utility.
Redhack was formed in 1997 on Marxist-Leninist principles. In 2005, the group wiped all unpaid traffic fines from the Istanbul Police Department.
"We dedicate this action to the villagers of Yırca, to those who resist in Validebağ, and to those who know that there are things more important than money and status in this life," the group tweeted.
In a recent interview with TheCryptosphere.com, one Redhack member pointed to destructive environmental policies as part of the motivation behind this latest strike.
Turkish officials are denying the attack, saying that the money owed had already been collected Oct. 27 and also that the amount compromised by the hack 1.5 million Turkish Liras, or $670,000.
