Early on April 16, 2021, Telegram channels supporting Shi'ite militias in Iraq claimed that the Ain Al-Assad base in western Iraq, which houses U.S. troops, among others, was attacked by a several drones, causing damage to sensitive targets. The Telegram channels circulated posters celebrating the operation and threatening further attacks.
