On July 5, 2018, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) tech group published a guide instructing WhatsApp users on how to adjust the application's settings to enhance the user's security and protect their privacy. The guide, titled "Your Security On WhatsApp," which was posted on the group's Telegram channel, strongly recommends that users download the application from the official sources, which are Google Play and the App Store, and use fake phone numbers for activation instead of SIM cards, which allow phone companies to track the SIM user and obtain chat conversations.
