Al-Qaeda's Syria branch Jabhat Al-Nusra (JN) recently launched crowdfunding efforts on the Russian social network VK (VKontakte). On September 20, 2015, JN militant Abu Rafik 'Abd Al-Mukaddim Tatarstani posted an appeal on his VK page to "sincere brothers and sisters who always support us" to contact him in order to donate to the group to "buy equipment and help brothers who are in need." On September 24 he added that funds were needed to "help several brothers who are in need and buy several items for that purpose."

Russian jihadis are particularly active on VK, as it is widespread among Russian-speakers, and have used it to raise funds in the past as well.
