Iran-Backed Iraqi Militia: We Donated One Billion Iraqi Dinars To The Campaign To Purchase Drones For The Houthis In Yemen

January 31, 2022

On January 24, 2022, following the latest wave of escalation in the fighting between the Houthis and the UAE and Saudi Arabia, supporters of Shi'ite militias in Iraq announced the launch of a fundraising campaign called, "Your Money [Means] Drones Targeting the Zayed Family," whose aim was to buy "weapons, equipment and drones," for the Houthi Ansar Allah movement in Yemen.

Several days after the start of the campaign, the military spokesman of one Iraqi militia declared that his organization had donated a billion Iraqi dinars to the campaign. In a post he shared on his Telegram channel, he boasted about "the victories of the axis of good and of faith over the axis of evil and tyranny, and especially against those who lack refinement in Saudi Arabia and the UAE."

According to the spokesman, there are "clear indications that they [Saudi Arabia and the UAE] will collapse and fall apart soon," and therefore one should be prepared "for every surprise or unexpected event that may occur in the region." He referred to the rocket attack on Baghdad International Airport on January 28, 2022, and maintained that it was part of the "policy of upsetting the existing order which is implemented by those who falsify elections and are corrupt," and urged the security apparatuses to expose the "mercenaries and those who are behind them."

The spokesman concluded his post by writing that as part of the execution of "the religious obligation and in order to assist the oppressed" his organization has donated a billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $686,376) to the fundraising campaign "which is led by a group of young Iraqis," and calls on all those in Iraq "who have dignity" to donate.

It is possible that the post indicates the involvement of the Iraqi organization in the campaign, and that it is intended to increase interest in the campaign and to encourage donations from other groups and militias and from individual Shi'ites as well.

The spokesman for the campaign responded to the post with a statement of thanked the militia for their donation. In a video clip on his Facebook page, he mentions that the campaign will continue over the coming days and calls on Shi'ites in Iraq to donate.

The campaign was also promoted on social media such as Telegram and Facebook and on Twitter with a hashtag as well as by means of posters which were disseminated on social media, encouraging the Iraqi people to donate to the campaign.
