On July 4, 2022, several pro-Iran Telegram channels published a statement by an Iran-backed militia in Iraq claiming that on the evening of July 1 the group's "aerial force" successfully flew a drone over the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad for over 30 minutes, without being detected by aerial defense systems. The statement noted that this operation, and any other operations to come, are a legitimate response the U.S.'s attack on Iraqi sovereignty and its spying on the Iraqi people."
