On July 19, 2015, Babar Ahmad, a British citizens who spent 10 years in British prisons fighting extraditions to the U.S., has been released after being sentenced to 12.5 years by a U.S. court in 2014 after pleading guilty to conspiracy and providing material to support terrorism. Babar's release comes because the time he spent in British prisons was considered part of his time served. The judge in Babar's trial said that despite the fact that he is unlikely to return to his activities, she told him that he "can't walk away from the fact that what you were doing was enabling Bin Laden to be protected in Afghanistan and to train the men who actually boarded the flights that drove into the Pentagon and World Trade Center."
Babar joined the Bosnian army in during the Balkans war, and in July 1996, began distributing audio tapes featuring stories of dead Muslims fighters, whom he hailed as martyrs. Babar later launched the jihadist website Azzam Publication, which promoted support for the Afghan Taliban. Babar was arrested by British authorities in 2004 and spent nearly a decade fighting extradition to the U.S.
