On May 18, 2023, the official media outlet of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released a statement claiming responsibility for a drone attack against a military outpost belonging to the "mercenaries of the [United Arab] Emirates," – the Shabwah Defense Force – in Shabwah Governorate, Yemen, causing the forces to flee.
