Official In Egypt's National Salvation Front: If Obama Attacks Syria, He Will Become One Of America's Bloodiest Presidents

September 12, 2013
Egypt | Special Dispatch No. 5443

Political analyst Dr. Wahid Abdel Meguid, formerly a member of Egypt's People's Assembly and currently an official in Egypt's National Salvation Front, which was the umbrella organization of opposition to the Mursi regime, published a column in the daily Al-Ahram in which he harshly criticized the U.S.'s intention to attack Syria and claimed that, if Obama decided to do so, he would become one of the bloodiest U.S. presidents since the 1960s. According to Abdel Meguid, there is no concrete proof that the Syrian regime was behind the chemical attack in Al-Ghouta, and therefore, if Obama attacked Syria under this pretext, it would be a repeat of the massacre carried out by George W. Bush in Iraq under a similar pretext that was later revealed to be false.

It should be mentioned that the Egyptian regime likewise expressed its objection recently to a U.S. military attack in Syria and its support for a political solution.

This position was also expressed in articles published recently in the Egyptian press.[1] It should be further noted that Abdel Meguid's article is part of an anti-American campaign that has been waged by the Egyptian media since Muhammad Mursi's ouster, a campaign that presents the U.S. as backing the Muslim Brotherhood.[2]

The following are excerpts from the article:[3]

"We will never forget the days when, together with [Egyptian singer and composer] Sheikh Imam 'Issa, we sang the masterpiece by [Egyptian poet] Ahmed Fouad Negm: 'The blood on the plate of the American president, the blood on the chest of the smug minister, the blood in the music and the notes of the songs, we write our slogans on the city walls.'

"The president to whom the song referred was Richard Nixon, who drank the blood of the people he killed with his [military] and intelligence forces, and who was driven from the White House in shame, outcast and condemned [following the Watergate affair]. The minister who sprayed his chest with the blood that his country's forces spilled was Henry Kissinger... after he [became] a killer by deciding to use forces, aircraft carriers, missiles, and other tools of death [in Vietnam], and after he became the aide of killers with the words he wrote and the speeches he delivered.

"Since the mid-1960s, we haven't seen a [single] American president whose plate was clear of the blood of one nation or more – but Barack Obama's case will be different if he attacks Syria as he promised. [In that case,] history will remember that the president who promised to end American wars and bring U.S. troops home was [actually] one of the presidents with the bloodiest plates. To the blood of Afghans, Pakistanis, Yemenis and others, he is now preparing to add Syrian blood, under the pretext that Bashar Al-Assad used chemical weapons in the Al-Ghouta area. Thus, he will be repeating the massacre carried out by George W. Bush in Iraq under [a similar] pretext, which was revealed to be false after the attack, the invasion and the bloodshed.

"The U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 on the grounds that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed chemical [sic.] weapons. [This,] even though [the U.S.] had supported this same regime in 1988, when it actually did use chemical weapons in the Kurdish Halabja area. [The U.S.] conspired with it, exonerating it of this heinous crime and attributing it to Iran. Clear-cut evidence has proved that the U.S. turned a blind eye to the Saddam regime's crime of attacking Halabja with weapons of mass destruction in 1988 because [the U.S.] was allied with [this regime] against Iran.

"Today, however, [the U.S.] is quick to attack Bashar Al-Assad's regime despite the lack of clear evidence that he – and not the terrorist organizations of the armed opposition – attacked Al-Ghouta with chemical weapons. In any case, the blood will remain on the plate of the American president until the American people, who are in a coma, awaken from their coma or slumber, if they are even still alive."
