In a communiqué dated July 1, 2009, Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen claimed to have captured new positions in the vicinity of the presidential palace in Mogadishu: "... A fierce battle took place in the neighborhoods of Yaqshid and Karan, near the Presidential palace, on Wednesday, 8 Rajab 1430 / July 1, 2009, and victory fell to the mujahideen......
