Protests and riots erupted in the Paris region overnight after police shot dead 17-year-old Nahel M., who failed to stop when ordered to do so by traffic police, on July 27, 2023. The protests and turmoil began in Nanterre, the Paris suburb where Nahel lived, home to a large immigrant community, and spread rapidly throughout France. Nahel’s mother is from Algeria, and individuals with an immigrant background (often young French citizens whose parents immigrated from North Africa or Africa) were quick to identify with Nahel.

On social media, ultranationalists were prompt to react to the situation. Outspoken rage and racism were conveyed by Telegram white supremacist users, including a call to “erase this dirty race.” In addition, neo-Nazi, fascist and white supremacist groups, purportedly trying to restore order, took action in Angers, Aubervilliers, Lyon, Chambery and Lorient to replace the "useless" police. Other ultranationalists seized the opportunity of the riots to organize and call for donations for their groups. The report provides a sample.
