On May 9, 2023, a Syrian opposition-affiliated Telegram channel reported that according to "special sources", Iran-backed militias carried out an experimental drone launch east of Deir Al-Zour, Syria. According to the report, the drones were launched from Al-Salihiyah, near Al-Bukamal, and flew to Al-Mayadin before turning around and returning to the launch site. The report elaborated that Iran's IRGC has recently sent reinforcements to Al-Salihiyah, in addition to the Iraqi PMU, Lebanese Hizbullah, and Afghan Fatemiyoun fighters already present. The report also featured a short video of one of the drones flown in the experiment.
