On August 31, 2021, Al-Qaeda's central media wing, Al-Sahab, released a statement congratulating the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, or the Taliban, on the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from the country, claiming that this "victory" has put an end to U.S. military intervention in Muslim countries.

In the wake of the August 30, 2021 withdrawal of the remaining U.S. troops from Afghanistan after 20 years, and the Taliban's takeover of the country, supporters of Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (ISIS) posted their reactions and comments online.

Speaking on a Pakistani television program, Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has said that it is not for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Afghan Taliban organization which seized power in Kabul on August 15) to decide about the legitimacy of the Pakistani Taliban group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

In an article published in the Taliban's monthly magazine, a writer argued that the views held by the Taliban today are consistent with the Taliban of the past, and responded to several accusations made against the Taliban, including the claim that they fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) on behalf of the West.

On August 30, 2021, the Islamic State (ISIS) released a statement saying that its fighters in Khorasan (i.e., Afghanistan) had successfully attacked Kabul Airport with six Katyusha rockets.

On August 27, 2021, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) claimed responsibility for an August 25 attack on Nigerian military barracks.

 

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) Releases Photos Showing Operatives Distributing Leaflets To Locals Warning Against Cooperation With "Apostate" Nigerian Army

On August 31, 2021, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) released a photo report showing ISWAP operatives in Nigeria distributing "da'wah [preaching] leaflets to the common Muslims explaining the severity of cooperating with the apostates or joining them."

On August 25, 2021, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) released a photoset depicting "an aspect of the agricultural activity of the subjects of the Islamic State in Nigeria."

 

American Pro-ISIS Media Operative Expresses Surprise At Reaction Of 'Enemies Of Allah' – Russia, China, U.S. – To Taliban's Takeover Of Afghanistan, Urges Supporters To Join Media Jihad, Be Mujahideen 'In Whatever Capacity You Are Able'

On August 30, 2021, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) English-language Telegram channel posted a message in the name of a U.S.-based ISIS supporter who expressed his surprise at the reaction of what he called "the enemies of Allah," including Russia, China, and the United States, at the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan and their failure to immediately form a coalition to remove the Afghan group.

 

Pro-ISIS Media Outlets Praise Kabul Bomber, Call On Supporters To Disseminate ISIS's Claim Of Responsibility, Photo Of Perpetrator On YouTube, Facebook

Following the statement released by the Islamic State (ISIS) in which it claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack, ISIS supporters and pro-ISIS media outlets published dozens of posts glorifying the attacker, rejoicing that he managed to kill U.S. forces, and urging fellow supporters to disseminate the ISIS's statement across social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube.

 

Pro-ISIS Media Outlets Celebrate Kabul Bombing With Threats To U.S., Condemnation Of Taliban

Following the August 26, 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul international airport – which killed 13 U.S. servicemen and more than 100 Afghans and wounded hundreds more, including 18 U.S. military personnel and several members of the Afghan Taliban – the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) claimed the attack, reporting the number of victims as "more than 160," including "more than 20 members of the American forces."

On August 30, 2021, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel commented on a CNN interview conducted with an alleged senior commander of the group's branch Khorasan, known as ISIS-K.

 

Pro-ISIS Media Outlets Release Content Promising To Exploit U.S. Withdrawal From Afghanistan, Pledging Further Attacks On The Taliban, Linking Kabul Airport Bomber To The 'Mastermind' Behind 9/11 Attacks

On August 31, 2021, pro-Islamic State (ISIS) media outlets released content celebrating the August 26 suicide bombing and August 30 rocket attack targeting Kabul airport, for which ISIS claimed responsibility.

 

Pro-ISIS Telegram Channel Celebrates Attacks At Kabul Airport With U.S. Soldiers Reported Among Casualties, Mocks Taliban's Pledge To Prevent Afghanistan From Being Base For Terrorism

Following media reports that at least two explosions took place near Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport amid the chaotic evacuation by the United States and other Western countries of their citizens and Afghans at risk from the Taliban, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel celebrated the attacks, which reportedly killed U.S. soldiers and citizens. It also mocked the Taliban's pledge not to allow Afghanistan to be used as a base for attacks against the West.

On August 11, 2021, pro-Islamic State (ISIS) media groups launched what appears to be a coordinated media campaign against Rwanda.

 

English-Speaking ISIS And Taliban Supporters React To ISIS-K Kabul Airport Attack On Facebook, Twitter, Taliban Supporters Decry Killing Of Muslims, While ISIS Supporters Claim U.S. Troops Were Target: 'The Apostate Taliban Are Now Officially The Guard Dogs Of The Crusaders'

English-speaking Islamic State (ISIS) supporters and Taliban supporters have been discussing their points of view on the ISIS-K (ISIS in Khorasan, i.e., Afghanistan) attack on the Kabul airport that targeted U.S. servicemen and Afghans. ISIS supporters celebrated the killing, while Taliban supporters criticized ISIS-K for killing Muslims. Some Taliban supporters also asserted that ISIS was working with Ashraf Ghani's regime.
