Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyeb said in a December 23, 2023, interview on Channel 1 (Egypt) that the war in Gaza is a genocidal war. He continued to say that October 7 was not an action in itself, but a reaction to a "chain of massacres." Al-Tayyeb said that if Egypt cuts off the oil supply and stops providing materials from its mines to European factories, "things will change."

Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb: "19,700 martyrs were killed in Gaza, including 8,000 children, which is more or less half of them. Who kills children? But they want to kill the children, along with the fathers…"

Interviewer: "It is a genocidal war."

Al-Tayyeb: "Yes, a genocide. To put it shortly, they want the land, and they want it clean, without the people who live there. If we cut off the oil supply for just one week, by Allah, things will change. If we stop providing materials from our mines in Africa to European factories, these factories will be unable to function. It should be known that what happened on October 7 is just a link in a chain, a chain of massacres."

Interviewer: "It was a reaction, not the action."

Al-Tayyeb: "Yes, it was a reaction. They didn't start it."
