On July 9, 2016, the information office of ISIS in Al-Raqqah province, Syria, published a 10-minute video titled "The Story of Recruitment." The video, which was also posted to the Al-Khilafa Telegram channel, targets young Syrians in ISIS-controlled areas, encouraging them to join the ranks of the organization. The video is a dramatization that "simulates reality" and follows a young man named Muhammad from the city of Al-Raqqah, who decides to join ISIS.
Following are excerpts:
Narrator: "This is the story of a young man called Muhammad from Al-Raqqah. He is twenty years old. He grew up in Al-Raqqah and lived there all his life, with its ups and downs. Muhammad recalled one of those terrible days, and the grave tribulations suffered by the people of the neighborhood. He recalled how he helped to rescue the wounded, and to pull them out from the rubble. He remembered the wounded - the children and the elderly. He recalled the screams of the wounded heard all over the place.
"This is the nature of tribulations: they remind one of his Lord, make him repent to his Creator, and comprehend the sad state of the Islamic nation, that will change only through sacrifice, Jihad and struggle. This is all the more true when one sees one's brothers sacrificing themselves in order to protect peaceful Muslims.
"Allah Akbar! The sound of the call to prayer fills his ears. It guides him to worship Allah. The sound of the call to prayer reminds him of the religious duty (of prayer), the sound of the call to prayer that calls people to stop whatever they are doing, in order to worship Allah, the Loftiest.
"These are the first steps that he took in fulfilling that duty (of Jihad), which he was too sluggish to fulfill for some time, when he was immersed in the pleasures of this world. Then Allah guided him to the right path and made him ready (to fulfill his duty), awaiting the moment that he would turn the page on those times of slumber."
