In his October 25, 2024, Friday sermon in Victoria, BC, following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, Canadian Islamic scholar Younus Kathrada emphasized the importance of following "good role models" and expressed disappointment that Muslim youth were unaware of such figures. While Kathrada did not explicitly mention Sinwar by name, he alluded to him multiple times, including referencing a "stick" Sinwar was seen holding just before being killed in a drone strike. Kathrada stated that anyone who did not understand the symbolism of the "stick" were "losers" and advised them to ask their parents about it. He also praised the mujahideen, whom the West often labels as terrorists, as heroes. Kathrada concluded by calling the youth "cowards" for being "too chicken" to go to the battlefield, though he clarified that they were not being asked to do so.
The sermon was posted on the YouTube channel of the Muslim Youth Victoria Islamic Center. Recently, Kathrada was invited by the University of Victoria Muslim Students Association to deliver a lecture on campus, but after media criticism citing MEMRI clips of Kathrada praising Jihad and denigrating Jews, the event was cancelled. Younus Kathrada: "And I remind myself and the rest of you of the great importance of good role models. And especially for our youth. We need to be aware of these individuals in whose footsteps we should be following. And recently, Allah took out for us from among the Muslims, a real hero. A hero that we should be speaking of in our homes and speaking of to our children.

"Just a few days ago, I asked some of our youth – not any youth – but youth that come from homes that are known to be concerned about Islam. I asked them 'Have you heard of so and so?' and the response was shocking. They couldn't tell me anything about that individual. But if I were to ask them about some low life individual who is famous because he's an athlete or an actor and so on and so forth, they could give me that person's life story.

"A stick! I wonder how many of our youth even know what I am referring to. If you don't, go and ask your parents. If you don't, wallahi you're a loser. Wallahi you're a loser.

"The mujahideen in the path of Allah, those, that the West refers to today as terrorists, those heroes of ours, this is what they have in their minds. They realize that what rests with Allah, the reward with Allah that is everlasting.

"And finally a message to our youth. And I want you to listen and listen carefully. We're not asking you to go out to the battlefield. No, you're too chicken for that. You're cowards! You'll never do it! I'm not going to ask you to do that. But let's hope that you have some sense of shame in you."
