Tehran Friday Sermon by Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati: We Are Determined to Obtain Nuclear Technology

The following are excerpts from a Friday sermon at Tehran university by Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, Guardian Council Secretary:

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati: Our hands are not tied [on the nuclear issue]. Our hands are free for the future. If they [the Europeans] fulfill their commitments, the Koran says: "So long as they carry out their obligations, you must carry out yours. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous." And if they violate the agreement, [the Koran says]: "If you fear treachery from people with whom you have made pacts, retaliate by breaking off your pact with them. Indeed, Allah does not love the treacherous." Throw the agreement back at the party that violated it. Make it clear that this agreement will be violated by both sides. They must know that they cannot violate the agreement unilaterally. If they violate [the agreement], we will do so as well. This is in case they don't fulfill their commitments. We're carrying out our part of the agreement. This [nuclear] issue is where we draw the line. They want to prevent [Iran's] development. Our people, our senior officials, and our institutions, from our dear leader down to all the officials and the entire people, stand firm in their decision and determination to obtain nuclear technology.
