Following are excerpts from a press conference held at Al-Azhar, Cairo, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on February 5, 2013. The press conference was aired by the Al-Jazeera network.


Hassan Al-Shafi’, advisor to Sheik Al-Azhar: I have visited Iran. I lived nearby, in South-East Asia, and I am familiar with the situation there. Let’s not bury our heads in the sand. Some might say that [the Sunni-Shiite conflict] is a thing of the past. No, it isn’t. It is a contemporary issue.


Out of a desire for unity, we say: We must remove these obstacles. A reference was made to the civil rights of some of our Sunni brothers in Iran. I’ll make do with that… Moreover, His Excellency…


Advisor: That’s not what we agreed upon, Hajj. We didn’t agree upon those words…
