Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin: The West Wants to Resort to the Issue of Chemical Weapons Again

Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin said that "it seems as if the West wants to help the terrorists in an attack against the Syrian army and its allies" and that "they want to resort, once again, to the issue of chemical [weapons]," calling it "the most provocative step taken by the West in recent years." He was speaking in an interview with the Lebanese NBN TV channel on August 26, 2018.

Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin: It is clear that the status quo will not continue for long, especially given the nature of the terrorists. They are no preparing to attack, as I said, according to the information of the Defense Ministry. It seems as if the West wants to help the terrorists in an attack against the Syrian army and its allies. This is serious, especially as they want to resort, once again, to the issue of chemical [weapons.] We must believe that this is the most provocative step taken by the West in recent years.

Host: Why?

Alexander Zasypkin: Because this has to do with WMDs. Anything to do with WMDs requires precision, because we are talking about global security, not only about the local issue. Chlorine is an exception, and perhaps is not considered a WMD, but in principle, anything related to chemical weapons is considered dangerous. The West is acting… I don't want to say that its behavior is random, but it is acting as if it is not responsible for anything whatsoever.
