PLO Executive Committee Sec.-Gen. Saeb Erekat: Hamas Participated in the Palestinian Authority's ICC Petition against Israel; Qatar Footed the Bill

Saeb Erekat, Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, was interviewed on Palestine TV on December 21, 2019. In the interview, he said that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas appointed a committee that would pursue legal action against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC).  He added that the committee includes members from Hamas as well as “all Palestinian political factions”, such as PFLP and DFLP. Erekat thanked Qatar for providing financial aid to cover the legal fees.

Saeb Erekat: After Palestine became a member of the International Criminal Court [ICC], President Abbas appointed a higher national supervising committee. I have the honor of being the committee’s chairman, and [FM] Riyadh Al-Maliki is the official link between the committee and the ICC, and he also serves as the committee’s rapporteur.

There were 45 members in the committee and we all worked as a team. Dr. Ghazi Hammad, for example, was elected as the committee’s spokesman… He is one of Hamas’ leaders. There were six Hamas members in the committee. Khalida Jarrar – may she be released soon – represented the PFLP. Qais Abu Layla [from the DFLP] was also a member. I don’t want to go into all the names, but I will just say that no [faction] was left out.

We asked and searched and in the end we contracted six international lawyers. They worked in the ICC. They left very respected and expensive law firms. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Qatar for providing us with the financial aid to cover the legal fees. Thanks are in order here because we could not afford the cost. Once [the money] was sent directly [to the lawyers], and another time, it was delivered through me and through the President’s office. This is something we appreciate very much.
