Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the Americans have made Pakistan a scapegoat for their failure in Afghanistan. He made these remarks in an interview that aired on Russia Today TV on September 17, 2021. Khan said that American senators have also blamed the “debacle” in Afghanistan on Pakistan, and both these things are the most painful to the Pakistanis. He also said that U.S. President Biden did the only “sensible” thing by leaving Afghanistan the way he did in the circumstances he was facing. Khan added that Pakistan will be the most severely impacted if Afghanistan does not reach stability, because it will suffer from a refugee crisis and terrorism from within Afghanistan. He continued to say that Pakistan had nothing to do with the events of 9/11 and that it had no reason to enter the war against Afghanistan, however the “military dictator at the time,” referring to former President Pervez Musharraf, dragged Pakistan into the war in order to “endear himself to the Americans.” Khan further said that that the mujahideen in the 1980s were trained to fight against foreign occupation, when they were fighting against the Soviets, while now these same people were being told that fighting the Americans is terrorism. He added: “So they turned against us and said that we are collaborators.”
