Eid Al-Fitr Sermon by Advisor to PA President Abbas: Not a Single Millimeter of the Western Wall Will Fall under Non-Palestinian Sovereignty

In a recent sermon, Mahmoud Al-Habbash, advisor to PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that the Al-Buraq Wall (the Western Wall) was part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and "more important than all the others." "The Al-Buraq Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine - not a single millimeter of them may fall under any sovereignty other than that of the Palestinian people," he said. The sermon, marking Eid Al-Fitr on June 25, was broadcast by the official Palestinian Authority TV channel and was attended by President Abbas.

Mahmoud Al-Habbash: Only oppressors and terrorists target mosques. There is no difference between the terrorism that has been targeting the Al-Aqsa Mosque for fifty years, from the day of its occupation to this very day - and when I say "terrorism," I am referring to the occupation... There is no difference between that terrorism and the terrorism that hit the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina a year ago, or the attempt to target the Holy Mosque in Mecca yesterday. The head and hands of whoever targets our mosques should be chopped off, and he should be annihilated.

These mosques, these symbols, are the pinnacle of our faith. They will continue to be tied to our faith until the Day of Judgment. Although it has been languishing under occupation for fifty years, our Al-Aqsa Mosque will remain as it is until the Day of Judgment. Its name, its character, and its significance to our faith will never change. Every inch of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, all its courtyards, all its installations, its walls, its gates, and first and foremost - more important than all the others - the Al-Buraq Wall [the Western Wall]... The issue is not up for debate.

The Al-Buraq Wall is part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is part of our faith, our religion, our existence, and part of the survival of our people. The Al-Buraq Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine - not a single millimeter of them may fall under any sovereignty other than that of the Palestinian people.
