Mohammad Shamas, former Al-Manar TV correspondent in Iran and currently editor of the pro-Iran Arabic and Hebrew website alkhanadeq.com, said in a February 9, 2025, appearance on Al-Manar TV (Hizbullah-Lebanon) that Iran could theoretically produce a nuclear weapon in a matter of two weeks. He added that if Iran faces an existential threat, it will opt to change its nuclear doctrine, which currently forbids the production of such weapons.
Mohammad Shamas: "The Americans and the West fear that if the pressure on Iran becomes extreme, it will have to change its nuclear doctrine, and obtain a nuclear weapon. The Americans and the West know that theoretically, Iran can produce a nuclear bomb in a matter of two weeks."
Al-Manar TV Host: "That's because there is a certain equation. I have heard this from experts. When you reach a certain level of peaceful usage, you have crossed the threshold of military usage, because peaceful usage of nuclear (energy) is, by itself, an advanced stage."
Shamas: "A nuclear bomb is made of uranium and plutonium. Plutonium is found in Iran. Uranium enriched to 90%..."
Al-Manar TV Host: "This is enough to produce a bomb in a matter of two weeks."
Shamas: "Today, Iran is enriching uranium to a level of 60%. They scaled it back a level, as a message of goodwill to enable the renewal of negotiations with the 5+1 countries. Nevertheless, Iran has reached the threshold of 60%, and theoretically, as former President Rouhani said, Iran is capable of enriching (uranium) to a level of 90%.
"The international inspectors know this, and the IAEA is aware of Iran's capabilities. So, in theory, Iran is capable of producing a nuclear bomb. It has crossed that line, but it does not want to do this. However, if they pose an existential danger, Iran will change its nuclear doctrine."
