In an April 8, 2023 show on MTV (Lebanon), Lebanese political analyst Joseph Abu Fadel criticized the VIP welcome that was given to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh upon his arrival to Lebanon. Abu Fadel said that if Lebanon’s leaders had any dignity, they would have arrested him at the airport, because Lebanon should not tolerate Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. He said that the Palestinians cannot force the Lebanese people to take up arms for their sake and that UNIFIL, Hizbullah, and the Lebanese army are the ones that should be considered responsible for the rockets launched from Lebanon by Palestinian factions against Israel earlier in the week. He also said that this shows that the Lebanon is a state in name only. In addition, Abu Fadel asserted that Lebanon cannot continue the conflict with Israel over its land border and the Al-Aqsa Mosque after the maritime border agreement has been signed. Moreover, he pointed out that Christians have holy sites like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Church of the Nativity, and yet they are not behaving the same way the Muslims are behaving with regard to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Joseph Abu Fadel: "With regard to Ismail Haniyeh's arrival in Lebanon, if our officials had any honor, dignity, or self-esteem, they would have arrested him at the airport. They shouldn't have given him an honorable VIP welcome, because they have no honor. Ismail Haniyeh should not receive such a welcome, because he is on the American terror list.
"Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, should not receive a VIP welcome because he has destroyed Syria, and had destroyed the entire region with his Muslim Brotherhood.

"We should not tolerate Hamas – not for a single moment. The Palestinians and our brothers and compatriots cannot force us to bear arms.

"The army, the Internal Security Forces, the State Security – what are they doing? In the south, you have UNIFIL, Hizbullah, and the Lebanese Army. How come rockets were fired [at Israel]? Those three are responsible. What kind of a country is this? What is this farce? Our country is a farce.

"We cannot reach an agreement with Israel regarding the maritime border and continue the conflict about the land border and continue to be in conflict with it over the Al-Aqsa Mosque. We are not buying this charade. We have holy places that are just sacred to us, Christians, as the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and even more, as far as we are concerned, like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Holy Sepulcher and the Church of Nativity, but we are not doing what they are doing. All the Arab countries are normalizing their relations with Israel. You can turn to the United Nations or the Security Council, but this charade in Lebanon must stop."
