On December 16, 2024, Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) reported on a tunnel evacuated by pro-Iran militias in northern Syria. The tunnel was located near the General Security Directorate in Deir Al-Zour, an area also housing Iranian militia headquarters and Russian Wagner forces. Sources revealed to Al-Jazeera that the Iranian militias had dug a 15-meter tunnel beneath a house used as their military base. According to the report, the tunnel appeared long and wide but was still under construction.
Reporter: "We are here at the security zone in Deir Al-Zour. This is where the building of the General Security Directorate is located, in addition to the operations headquarters of the Iranian militias, as well as the Russia Wagner militia. We were told by our sources that those Iranian militias have dug a tunnel under a house that served as the operations headquarters here, and that the tunnel is over 15-meter deep underground. So we entered this building that, we were told, served as the operations center of the Iranian militias.
"We will now climb down the tunnel. We have now climbed down the tunnel. It is 15-20 meters deep, as I have said. [Underneath] these houses, there are two spaces. There is a small elevator that was maybe used to carry equipment or dirt, and there is also an emergency elevator. The place is equipped. Let's see where this tunnel takes us.
"This part of the tunnel was not completed, as you can see. As you can see, it was not equipped yet. Perhaps, they did not get an opportunity to finish it. As we could see before going down, this is the emergency exit, whereas the one we used to get down was built for the elevator. This is the rest of the tunnel. As you can see, this is the rest of the tunnel. These installations are for the phone lines. In addition, these are installations for electricity. The tunnel is long. There is another door here, but it is not completed. Even the cement is new here, as you can see. This is a new tunnel. It is not narrow at all. I am 191 centimeters tall and I can stand here with ease."
