On January 22, 2025, Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) aired footage of an address delivered by Hussein Fayyad, the commander of Hamas's Beit Hanoun Brigade who had previously been declared dead by the Israeli military. Fayyad said that in a conflict, if the weaker party (i.e. Hamas in the face of Israel) is not defeated then it is victorious by default. He said that Israel has only harmed stones, body parts, and blood, and that Gaza refused to be broken, as was seen when Gazans took to the streets "victorious and honorable" after the ceasefire agreement with Israel took effect.
Hussein Fayyad: "I would like to say something that some people will understand and some people might not. We have been through war, and perhaps people who suffered losses will ask 'Where's the victory?' or whatever. Wars are [about] goals that need to be achieved. If you do not achieve your goal, you have been defeated. Like the military rules, as well as other rules, say: If the strong party does not win, it is defeated, and if the weak party is not defeated, it is victorious. With the help of Allah, [Israel] only harmed some stones and some body parts and blood, but Gaza refused to be broken, and we all saw yesterday how Gaza took to the streets, victorious and honorable, with its head held high."
