Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei: “Strategic Extension” Beyond Iran’s Borders More Important than the Country's Essential Necessities; Iran to Further Reduce Nuclear Commitments

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei spoke before the members of the High Council of Commanders of the IRGC on October 2, 2019. Khamenei said that Iran should not limit itself to protecting its own "four walls." He continued to say that Iran's "strategic extension" beyond its borders is "sometimes more important than the country’s most essential necessities." He added that Iran's enemies made great investments in the region only to be stuck in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. He accused Iran's enemies of creating ISIS and then taking credit for destroying it and added that ISIS was destroyed by "the young men of Syria, Iraq, and Iran." Khamenei announced that Iran will continue to reduce its commitments to the nuclear agreement, stating that Iran's commitments to the agreements will be reduced until it reaches its "desired result."

Following are excerpts:

Ali Khamenei: The resistance network in this region has already demonstrated its capabilities in the struggle against [global] arrogance, against America, and against the united front of heresy and injustice. See what role the IRGC plays in this huge network – beginning with Palestine and ending with other issues in West Asia, and other places – and this forum is not the place to discuss them. Regarding the IRGC... The presence of the IRGC in the geographical realm of the resistance is so prominent that it has evoked hostility against it – the hostility of bad people, the hostility of the front of evil. This, in and of itself, is a great honor. When the most evil people in the world are hostile towards someone, it is a great honor.

Do not lose your wide view of the geography of resistance. Do not lose your view [of what lays] beyond the borders.

People who sat at home waiting to be attacked were humiliated. We should not be like this. We should not limit ourselves to these four walls – without any concerns about those behind the walls and the threats [against us]. This wide view beyond our borders and our strategic extension or our strategic depth, are sometimes more important than the country's most essential necessities. This should be taken into consideration, but many people do not notice this. Some people do not notice this, but they support the enemy, by saying: "No to Gaza and Lebanon."

The more our enemies invest, the more they lose. Look at this region. Let's say... How much have they invested in Afghanistan? They are still stuck there. They are still losing. In West Asia... In Syria, in Iraq, and elsewhere. They have invested so much. How much did they invest in the creation of ISIS? Now they are saying: 'We have destroyed ISIS.' How dare you say this? Was it you who destroyed ISIS? ISIS was destroyed by the young men of Syria, Iraq, and Iran – not by you.

Ali Khamenei: So far, [the U.S. policy] of maximum pressure has failed. I am telling you with all certainty that maximum pressure will ultimately fail.

Ali Khamenei: We oppose and we fight against the partition of the world to those who rule and those who are ruled. By no means will we succumb to those dictates. So far, we have managed to make strides in this regard and to mobilize many of the people in the world, much of the public opinion, of the intellectuals, and of the public forums. We have won them over to our path. We will most certainly continue on this path.

We will continue to reduce our commitments regarding the nuclear agreement. This should be continued. It should be continued in all seriousness. The Iranian nuclear organization [AEOI] is responsible for this. They must implement – in a comprehensive, full, and precise manner – the reduced commitments declared by the government of the Islamic Republic, until we reach the desired result. With the grace of God, we will definitely reach the desired result.
