Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that Iran requires "real guarantees" from Britain, Germany, and France, because "we do not trust them." "If the Europeans do not meet these demands, we will have the right to renew our nuclear activity," he said, and the crowds responded with chants of "Death to America!" and "Death to England!" The speech was attended by a large group of Iranian officials, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif can be seen joining in the chants. Comparing America to "the famous cat from 'Tom and Jerry'," Khamenei further said that "all their exaggerated tricks and ploys have failed." The speech aired on Iran's Channel 1 TV on May 24.
Following is a transcript:
Ali Khamenei: Everything [the Americans] have done and all the efforts they have invested have failed. Just like the famous cat in “Tom and Jerry,” all their exaggerated tricks and ploys have failed. Today, we are in a similar situation, and [America] will fail.
Europe must commit itself to refrain from bringing up the issue of the missiles, and of Iran’s presence in the Middle East. They must make this commitment.
As I have said, we have no problem with [Britain, Germany, and France], but we do not trust them. We do not want to fight or cause problems, but we do not trust these countries. This is based on our past experience, and therefore, they must give us real guarantees. The next point is that if the Europeans do not meet these demands, we will have the right to renew our nuclear activity.
Audience: Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!
Khamenei is the leader! Death to those who oppose the Rule of the Jurisprudent! Death to America! Death to England! Death to the hypocrites and the infidels! Death to Israel!
Ali Khamenei: The population [growth] is one of the issues raised by the West. Recently, the propaganda machine of wicked England calculated that Iran would be a good country for thirty million people. God willing, our population will reach 150 million.
