Iranian President Hassan Rouhani: We Will Have a Score to Settle with the UAE If It Gives Israel a Foothold in the Region

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in an August 15, 2020 address that aired on IRINN TV (Iran) that the UAE is making a mistake by establishing relations with Israel, and that it is betraying the Palestinians, the Muslims, and Jerusalem. He said that he hopes the UAE would "go back on this mistake," and he warned that if it gives Israel a "foothold" in the region, Iran will have a score to settle with it.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani: "We have recently seen that one of our neighbors [the UAE] has unfortunately gotten closer with the enemy of Islam and of the region, and with the murderer of the Palestinian people. It has decided to establish relations with the Zionist regime. This is a Muslim country, with a good and religiously pious population, but the leaders are on the wrong path. They think that if they stick to America and the Zionist regime, their security will be guaranteed, and their economy will grow. This is a total mistake. First of all, this step is a mistake, from our perspective, and we condemn it 100%.  It is a betrayal of the cause of the Palestinians, the Muslims, and Jerusalem.

"If incorrect relations are being established, how come a third country announces it, instead of the two parties involved? Why is America the one announcing it? So that some gentleman in Washington can get more votes, will we betray our country, our people, the Muslims, the Arab world, and everyone?

"Unfortunately, the UAE has made a very big mistake. We hope that it will go back on this mistake and understand that this is the wrong path. This path does not serve the interests of the leaders or their security. We are warning them not to give Israel a foothold in the region, because then we will have a score [to settle] with them, and we will deal with them differently. They must take heed. Thus far, they have made a big error, and it is an act of betrayal. We hope that they will learn their lesson and not continue down this wrong path."
