The following are excerpts from an address by Iranian leader Ali Khamenei. Channel 1 of the Iranian TV aired this speech on March 21, 2005:
Ali Khamenei: The American politicians, who are liars and hypocrites, conceal their satanic goals by accusing Iran of trying to make nuclear warheads, placing them on ballistic missiles, and launching them. Where to?! We don't behave this way towards our enemies. Using atomic bombs to annihilate nations is what the Americans themselves do. To this day, they are the only country to commit this great crime. The Westerners were the ones who made chemical weapons and used them. During the eight-year war between Iraq and Iran they made them available to Saddam's people and the Ba'athists. They kept silent about the crimes committed, and they supported Saddam.
We are not warmongers like the American politicians. They are warmongers. They like wars. We are not like this. However, when this nation's honor and this homeland's interests are at stake, we will sacrifice ourselves.

Ali Khamenei: We are prepared to sacrifice ourselves. We don't believe sacrifice should be the fate of the common people alone. The president and the senior American officials… After the events of 9/11, when the two towers in New York were attacked, for two or three days no one heard from the president, the vice-president, or the senior officials. They vanished. We are not like this. If, God forbid, we undergo an unpleasant experience or ordeal, we will stand at the head of the people, wearing the clothes of war, and we'll be prepared to sacrifice ourselves.
