Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a February 18, 2023 address that aired on Channel 1 (Iran) that while the February 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria is an "important incident," it is a "small thing" compared to "political issues," such as Palestine and American interference in the region.

Ali Khamenei: "The devastating earthquake that occurred in Turkey and Syria is a harsh incident and is connected to all the Muslims. Everybody should suffer and feel pain from such things, but compared to political issues like the issue of Palestine, or the American interference in the different countries of the region — like Syria and other places — this [earthquake] is a small thing. Nevertheless it is an important incident."
