ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Visits Syria's De Facto Ruler Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Who Invited Khan's Office To Discuss Supporting The HTS Regime's Effort To 'Investigate Crimes' Committed In Syria

On January 18, 2025, Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) aired a report about a recent meeting between Syria's de facto ruler, HTS leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa (known also by his nom de guerre Abu Muhammad Al-Joulani), and the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim A. Khan. The meeting was also attended by HTS's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Assad Al-Shaybani and by a delegation led by Khan. According to the report, the new regime in Syria had invited Khan's office with the goal of recruiting its support "in order to guarantee the investigation of crimes committed in the country."

Reporter: "In Syria, the leader of the new administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Al-Shaybani, met with an ICC delegation, headed by its chief prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan. Khan's office stated that the visit came after the new Syrian regime had sent an invitation, [with the regime aiming to secure the ICC's] support in order to guarantee the investigation of the crimes committed in the country."
