Former Jordanian PM Fayez Tarawneh: Jordan Should Not Commit Suicide, Israel Plans To Annex Palestinian Lands, Not Jordanian Lands

Former Jordanian Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh said in a June 30, 2020 interview on Roya TV (Jordan) that it upsets him that the decisions regarding Israeli annexation are being made in Washington. He also said that the planned Israeli annexation pertains to Palestinian land, not to Jordanian land. Tarawneh said that even though Jordan has an emotional bond with Palestine, this does not mean that it has to take steps that would lead to its annihilation, such as declaring a war against Israel.

Fayez Tarawneh: "What upsets me very much is that the annexation decision is being made in Washington."

[...]

Host: "What options do we have against the annexation if it takes place?"

Tarawneh: "If you make a big deal out of something, it will be a big deal, and if you don't, it won't. 'The annexation of the Jordan Valley' they say, but this is Palestinian. The Jordanian side has nothing to do with it. They are not going to annex Jordanian lands. We demarcated our border with Israel in the peace treaty.

[...]

"This emotional [bond] between us and Palestine does not mean that we have to do things that would lead to our annihilation. Name one power in the Arab world that is talking about the Palestinian cause. With all the 'Arab coordination' and so on, we have not managed to do anything. There are people who want Jordan to declare war against Israel over the annexation of the Jordan Valley. Why should we commit suicide?"
