Former Jordanian MP Laith Shubeilat criticized King Abdullah, saying that a handful of people were determining the fate of Jordan, without anybody knowing what is going on. "He is pulling all the strings by himself, and I doubt that he can withstand the [American] pressure. How can he, when he has no real men behind him?" said the Islamist politician. Shubeilat, who was interviewed by Mayadeen TV on June 24, further said: "The country is being sold out, and the fate of Palestine and Jordan is doomed. How can we remain silent?"
Laith Shubeilat: "King [Abdullah] dreams at night that he should change the constitution, and within 24 hours, he changes it. Then, hundreds of people – MPs, ministers, and senators – agree to this! They agree! To hell with you! Aren't there any real men among you? Can the country be hijacked just like that?

"They are trying to entice us to give up our honor [and accept the 'Deal of the Century']. They are saying that they will give us billions and will do this, that, and the other, but when the [Palestinian] cause is over, they will throw a million or two at us. Then, when we ask: 'What, do you think we are whores?' they'll say: 'That's already been established. Now it's just a question of the price.'

"I do not believe what King [Abdullah] is saying, plus, I have no idea what he is saying [in the negotiations]. The king is acting alone. He is the same age as my sons, and now he brings along his son, who is younger than my grandson, and this handful of people are deciding the fate of Jordan, without the government – or anybody – knowing what's going on. We have doubts. He is pulling all the strings by himself, and I doubt he can stand the [American] pressure. How can he, when he has no real men behind him?

"When the nation is behind [the king], he instills fear [in his rivals], but without the people, he does not scare anyone. The people he relies upon in order to stay in power are the ones who will eventually remove him from power."

Interviewer: "What about the opposition parties, especially the Muslim Brotherhood? If the official Jordanian authority accepts a 'Deal of the Century' in some form or another, will the opposition, and especially the Muslim Brotherhood, go along with it, or will they oppose the deal?"
Laith Shubeilat: "They will take a very powerful position. Do you know what they will do? They will publish a communiqué, rejecting the deal. That's really scary..."
Interviewer: "So what needs to be done?"
Laith Shubeilat: "What do you mean, man? The country is being sold out, and the fate of Palestine and Jordan is doomed. How can we remain silent?"
