The following are excerpts from an interview with Fatah Central Committee member Tawfiq Al-Tirawi, which aired on Al-Mayadeen TV on January 23, 2014:

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: There is no [Israeli-Palestinian] framework agreement. It is a lie. Let me tell you, if there was...

TV host: But Kerry says there will be a framework agreement in April.

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: Fine, let him say so. Even if Kerry says that there is a framework agreement, the Palestinians will reject it.

There are no circumstances under which a Palestinian state will be established in the West Bank and Gaza in the next 20 years. Absolutely not.

TV host: It's not possible.

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: Right, it's not possible. Anybody who believes that there is a possibility that a Palestinian state will be established in the next 20 years is mistaken. The negotiations will get us nowhere. We [in Fatah] need to return to the circle of action. All the Palestinian organizations should do this [jointly].

TV host: What you are saying is new and important.

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: Let me tell you, when we enter the cycle of action, many things will change.

TV host: By the cycle of action, you mean...

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: Resistance, in all its forms. But what is resistance, brother? Remaining steadfast constitutes resistance. Negotiations are a kind of resistance, but it needs to be reinforced by what is happening on the ground, right?

TV host: You are referring to weapons...

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: Weapons and popular resistance. There are hundreds of ways to conduct resistance.

[...]

TV host: General Al-Tirawi, these are new things we are hearing from Fatah – that Fatah is returning to the cycle of action, and that an agreement regarding the establishment of a Palestinian state will not be reached even in 20 years. Let me ask you...

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: No, there is something I would like to clarify. This is not something new for Fatah. In our sixth congress...

TV host: You are talking about Fatah returning to the option of resistance.

Tawfiq Al-Tirawi: No, let me finish please. In our sixth congress, held in Bethlehem, we did not rule out any kind of resistance – and that includes armed resistance.
