Egyptian Terrorist Captured in Iraq Tells of Terrorism and His Training

The following are excerpts from the interrogation of Egyptian terrorist Mahmoud Hassan who was captured in Iraq. Al-Iraqiya TV aired this interview on February 24, 2005:

Interviewer: What's your name?

Mahmoud Hassan: Mahmoud Ahmad Muhammad Hassan.

Interviewer: What is your nationality?

Mahmoud Hassan: Egyptian.

Interviewer: When were you born?

Mahmoud Hassan: Egyptian 1965.

Interviewer: Since when have you been in Iraq?

Mahmoud Hassan: Since March 1989.

Interviewer: What do you do in Iraq?

Mahmoud Hassan: I work in the market, sir.

Interviewer: To which terrorist organization do you belong?

Mahmoud Hassan: To a group of five people, sir.

Interviewer: What does this group do?

Mahmoud Hassan: Sir, we slaughtered six people.

Interviewer: Before we get to the slaughtering, your activity… This group belongs to the so-called "Liberation Army." What were this army's missions?

Mahmoud Hassan: Killing, robbery, and looting.

Interviewer: Killing, theft, and looting. Some army this is.

Mahmoud Hassan: Yes, sir.

Interviewer: As for as you know, who supports this army?

Mahmoud Hassan: A man called Ahmad Ibrahim Al-Turki.

Interviewer: Where is he from?

Mahmoud Hassan: I don't know, sir.

Interviewer: Who knows him?

Mahmoud Hassan: You could say that Adam does, sir.

Interviewer: So these are complex networks in which an individual in a squad doesn't know who his commander is or where his instructions come from?

Mahmoud Hassan: Yes, sir.

Interviewer: Well, why did you slaughter?

Mahmoud Hassan: I didn't slaughter.

Interviewer: So what did you do?

Mahmoud Hassan: I only helped and bound their hands.

Interviewer: Why?

Mahmoud Hassan: For the money, sir.

Interviewer: How many people did you slaughter?

Mahmoud Hassan: Six.

Interviewer: Who were they?

Mahmoud Hassan: From the National Guard, sir.

Interviewer: How did you know that they were from the National Guard?

Mahmoud Hassan: Because of their uniforms, sir.

Interviewer: Describe in detail how the slaughtering was carried out.

Mahmoud Hassan: We were in the hotel. A group of masked men came in with six people, and said: "There are from the National Guard, and we want to slaughter them."

Interviewer: What are you, a slaughterhouse?!

Mahmoud Hassan: Sir, we slaughtered them at midnight, and at 6 a.m., they came to collect them.

Interviewer: The bodies remained with you at the hotel all night?

Mahmoud Hassan: Yes.

Interviewer: Are you human?

Mahmoud Hassan: No, sir.

Interviewer: Didn’t the people you slaughtered beg for their lives? Didn't they say: "My brother, what are you doing? Man, you are a Muslim, how can you slaughter me?" Didn't they speak?

Mahmoud Hassan: Sir, it was an hour of greed – a moment of Satan.

Interviewer: So they begged you…

Mahmoud Hassan: My thoughts at that time…

Interviewer: Did they talk to you?

Mahmoud Hassan: Yes, sir.

Interviewer: What did they say?

Mahmoud Hassan: They begged and said: "Set us go and we will give you anything you want." That kind of things, sir.

Interviewer: And why didn't you release them?

Mahmoud Hassan: Sir, we were afraid.

Interviewer: Who were you afraid of? You weren't afraid to slaughter them, you weren't afraid of Allah, you weren't afraid the police or army would raid the hotel and see this slaughter - who were you afraid of?

Mahmoud Hassan: Sir, these things just happened, and we didn’t think about this… We weren’t thinking logically.

Interviewer: Were you drunk? Did you drink?

Mahmoud Hassan: No, we weren't drunk.

Interviewer: So where was your mind?

Mahmoud Hassan: We lost it, sir.

Interviewer: How much did you get?

Mahmoud Hassan: $200, sir.

Interviewer: $200?

Mahmoud Hassan: Yes, sir.

Interviewer: $200 for all the slaughters?

Mahmoud Hassan: For each body, sir.
