Egyptian Men's Rights Activist Tareq Imam: Women Today Have Become Rebellious and Conceited

Following are excerpts from an interview with Tareq Imam, the Men's Rights Association in Egypt, which aired on Al-Arabiya TV on November 25, 2008.

Tareq Imam: The statistics presented are completely inaccurate. They never talk about the violence of women toward men and the reasons why women are subjected to violence. If the man receives love, respect, and affection, and the woman protects her honor... Not only a woman’s clothes determine whether she protects her honor - clothing never provide such protection. A woman may or may not wear a niqab. I am talking about all Arab women, not just Egyptian women. If a woman protects herself, if she respects herself, and protects her honor... The Prophet Muhammad said: "A good woman is one whom you are pleased to see, she is loyal to you, and obeys you." Women today have become rebellious and conceited. Some women are crazy, some women want to marry more than one man, and some women have relations with more than one man.

Interviewer: This does not change the fact that women are subjected to violence, by her husband or anyone else.

Tareq Imam: Men are also subjected to violence. Some women put poison in their husband’s food, killing them. Some women cheat on their husband. Isn’t that violence? You talk about sexual harassment. If a man looks at a woman because he likes her and wants to marry her, it is considered sexual harassment. But you don't talk about women who sexually harass men. I myself have suffered from this.

[...]

Women must be obedient and protect their honor. That’s Islam. A vain, conceited, and crazy woman will be subjected to violence, whether by her husband or by her boyfriend.
