Egyptian-American political analyst Magdi Khalil said in a video posted to his YouTube channel on May 22, 2024 that for many years, Egypt has been "peddling" in the Palestinian cause, fanning the tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, and acting in a fashion that extends the conflict between Hamas and Israel. He said that Egypt believes that it benefits from this economically and politically and that despite the 1979 Camp David Accords, it has never fully embraced peace with Israel, even though this would benefit it greatly.
He elaborated that Israel has never violated the peace agreement with Egypt, while Egypt has done so many times, with Israel letting it go. Khalil explained that the fact that Israel is considered an enemy in Egypt's military and religious doctrines, that Egypt cooperates with Hamas with regard to arms smuggling, and that there is widespread anti-Israel and antisemitic discourse in Egyptian media and culture all constitute a violation of the Camp David Accords.
Magdi Khalil: "What does Egypt want from the Philadelphi Corridor? Egypt clearly wants to restore it as a strategic passage serving Hamas and Egypt itself. It wants to be a source of economic corruption for influential leaders in Egypt, as well as part of the strategic passage used by Hamas and Egypt in their arms smuggling game, so that the wars between Hamas and Israel continue.

"Egypt considers it very important to keep the Palestinian cause constantly in flames, because Egypt peddles in the Palestinian cause. People who say that the Palestinian cause if part of Egypt's national security…What should be part of Egypt's national security is keeping the region in a state of peace, preventing unrest in the region, and to protect its border to prevent dangerous elements from crossing into Egypt from Gaza. This is the [real] national security of Egypt. Egypt should defend its border rather than help to light up fires. From the days of Mubarak, Egypt has considered the peddling of the Palestinian cause to be extremely important economically and politically.

"Biden had never called the Egyptian president before 2021, when there was a clash between Gaza and Israel. They believe that they benefit, both economically and politically, from the tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. However, I would like to reiterate that had Egypt fully endorsed peace, it would have benefited many times over.

"Israel has not violated the peace agreement with Egypt since its signing in 1979. Even what Egypt considers to be a violation, now in 2024, is not really a violation, because Israel officially informed Egypt last January that it would go into Rafah, for security reasons, and Egypt should have shown understanding to these security reasons, following October 7, just like Israel showed understanding when Egyptian reinforcements entered Sinai, after 2011.

"Egypt has violated the peace agreement with Israel many times, and Israel has let it go, since it did not lead to escalation and confrontation.

"When Egypt signed the peace agreement, many of the Al-Azhar sheikhs considered it to be like the Treaty of Al-Hudaybiyya – something temporary, a ruse. Just a few days ago – imagine that – a guy called Tarek El Khouly, the head of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Egyptian parliament, said: 'We chose peace as a strategic maneuver to regain our lands.'

"Egypt did not want, and did not work for, true peace, and it violated the peace treaty with Israel many times. In what ways? First, considering Israel to be an enemy in Egypt's military doctrine, the religious doctrine, and the state-controlled media, is a violation of the Israeli-Egyptian peace accord.

"The [refusal] to normalize the relations, right from the start, is a violation. The agreement includes complete normalization of relations.

"The widespread discourse of hate directed against the Jews and Israel, in Egyptian media, education, religious discourse, professional unions, and public forums… The widespread discourse of hate directed against the Jews and Israel, Violates the Egyptian-Israeli peace accord. The terror attacks across the border are the outcome of the rhetoric of hate.

"Coordinating with Hamas with regard to the smuggling of weapons is a direct act of enmity towards Israel. It has been going on through the tunnels and the Philadelphi Corridor. This is an act of enmity and a violation that shatters the peace accord."
